Waypoint closely monitoring new coronavirus
Global concern about the novel (new) coronavirus - a respiratory virus with pneumonia-like symptoms - is growing, and while no cases have been reported in Canada, Waypoint is monitoring this situation closely. Although the risk in Ontario remains low, Waypoint has already put protocols in place and are working with healthcare partners, including the Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit, to ensure the region is prepared.
At Waypoint, safety is our priority and we have robust and effective infection prevention and control policies in place. Signs are posted at all Waypoint entrances asking visitors to not visit if they are exhibiting signs and symptoms for communicable illnesses.
What you should do
If you have a fever and symptoms of lower respiratory illness (cough and feeling unwell) AND have travelled from China in the past 14 days or have been in close contact with a person who travelled to China and is unwell, you should be assessed by a healthcare provider. If at all possible, make sure to call ahead to let them know you're coming so that infection control measures can be put in place.
How you can protect yourself
There is no vaccine for this new virus, however you can protect yourself by washing your hands often with soap and water, or using an alcohol-based hand sanitizer if water is unavailable. You can help to reduce the spread of respiratory infections such as coronavirus by covering your mouth and nose with a tissue or your sleeve (not your hands) when coughing or sneezing and by staying home when you are sick.
